STEP 1: The need for an ecological product

The ethical question linked to environmental protection is now part of our lives. Every single choice in our daily life has to deal with this fact: from the purchase of clothing, to eating habits, from the choice of cosmetic products, to the selection of recyclable or biodegradable materials.

The imprudent use of plastics has polluted the seas around the world, our coasts, our rivers and the water that each of us regularly consumes. Today, over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our planet's oceans every year.

From here was born the desire to find new solutions, to challenge one's wits, to get involved and to do your part. Molly Knickerbocker and Massimo Massarotto (founders of Apepak) thus combined the past experiences of two distant realities (the American and the Italian) to rediscover the wonderful potential of beeswax.

STEP 2: The idea

Molly Knickerbocker is originally from Napa Valley (California), a green area with a great culture for food and wine. Raised in a family of cooks and beekeepers, she has always nurtured an innate passion for growing healthy and organic food. Massimo Massarotto, was born and raised in Castelfranco Veneto, nurturing from a very young age the desire to travel to discover different cultures and realities up close. At the age of twenty he moved to California to closely study some of the most important startups in the Western world. The San Francisco business models were a real inspiration for the great attention is paid to ecological innovation and the redistribution of resources for the benefit of the community.

The exchange of ideas and the sharing of experiences between Massimo and Molly led to the birth of a real project: being able to combine the passion for food and the rejection of anything that would damage the environment, such as the use of disposable food packaging. Intense days of work and tests thus gave life to the first prototypes of what would become the Apepak cloths, made with cotton scraps from Molly's grandmother and her father's beeswax: 100% natural and 100% ecological.

The enthusiasm with which the first clothes were welcomed made it possible to imagine the launch on the Italian market. Across the ocean with just a small laptop, dedication and energy Massimo and Molly had created the Apepak company.

STEP 3: The choice of raw materials

If the aim of protecting the environment and enhancing the resources of the Italian territory are the basis of the Apepak project, the selection of local, organic and certified raw materials it could only be the next and most important step to take.

The first choice was to use only GOTS cotton (Global Organic Textile Standard), produced in compliance with environmental and social criteria applied at all levels: from the collection of natural fibers in the field to the subsequent manufacturing phases, up to the labeling of the finished product.

Beeswax, on the other hand, is supplied by CONAPI, official partner of Apepak. A reality that involves over 600 Italian beekeepers, united by love for their work, respect for bees and the defense of biodiversity.

Having found the product and selected the raw materials, the history of Apepak has passed to the development phase, finding a real resource in the local Veneto realities.

STEP 4: Implementation with Industry 4.0 Meeting

Sharing and social cohesion are essential levers in order to improve our lives and achieve that ecological conversion that the environment itself requires. Therefore, the choice to entrust the production of Apepak cloths to Social Cooperative The Industry 4.0 meeting, which precisely on the theme of social redemption and of mutual trust built its history.

The Cooperative has embraced the project by making available its production areas in Vedelago (in the province of Treviso) and its workforce. They are integrated into the Cooperative's staff fragile subjects who need to acquire skills and autonomy, to reintegrate into the world of work and into the social fabric. The Industry 4.0 meeting welcomes people who positively accept the challenge of work as an opportunity for growth and redemption.

The spirit was immediately the right one and after an initial training phase the work started at full speed, stimulated by a sense of active participation a a social and at the same time innovative project, useful for the environment and the community.

STEP 5: Growth

Italy is often a difficult country in which young companies and innovative ideas struggle to establish themselves. The difficulties encountered were many, but determination can prevail even in the hardest moments. So, step by step, Apepak's story ended up being powerful encouragement for all those who want to make a difference.

Massimo and Molly have decided to involve the Italians personally, to prove not only the validity of the product, but the ecological reach generated by the abolition of films for disposable food. They therefore invested all their savings in the production of a first stock of Apepak cloths subsequently donated to 200 Italian families, for free. The purpose was to focus the attention of the testers on the usefulness and reliability of Apepak cloths.

 

The partnership found was truly a huge satisfaction and is still the real backbone of the project today. In a short time, more and more opportunities for collaboration were gathered as well as a spontaneous and growing media interest. The messages of solidarity and support collected fueled the confidence of Apepak who decided to focus on the empowerment of people, increasingly aware of the value of their decisions and actions. Compared to the classic branding strategies, with investments in advertising and sponsorship, Apepak has chosen to nurture good habits, abandoning the logic of profit and investing in mutual exchange It is on collective good.

STEP 6: The future we are building

 The story of Apepak reaches today. In 2020 the work of Massimo, Molly and of the collaborators who over time have joined the team, has ensured that the Apepak cloths reach over 16,000 Italian families.

And most importantly, each time each of these families uses an Apepak cloth, they save the environment 1 square meter of disposable film or wrapping, produced with non-renewable sources and harmful to our planet.
